Frequently Asked Questions: Person Centered Housing Options, Outcomes, Services, & Environment (PCHOOSE) Study
What is the study about?
The study is aimed at understanding the risk of COVID-19 in supportive housing. This survey will ask you questions on topics such as: your quality of life, healthcare utilization, & health behaviors related to COVID.
To participate, individuals need to have been approved for permanent supportive supportive housing, be 18 years or older, speak English, and be able to provide informed consent.
What does the study involve?
Participants complete a baseline survey when they enroll in the study that is sent to them via text message. The baseline survey should take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete. Participants will then receive a shorter follow-up survey once a month for 6 months.
What if I don’t have a phone?
Everyone who enrolls in the study is provided a smartphone that they can keep at the end of the study, plus an unlimited data plan for the duration of the study (6 months).
Other than receiving a free smartphone with an unlimited data plan, are there any other incentives to participate?
Participants will receive a $15 electronic gift card for each monthly survey that they complete so they can receive up to $90 if they complete all 6 monthly surveys.
A few participants will also have the opportunity to participate in 3 open-ended interviews over the course of the study that are conducted by the PCHOOSE staff. These interviews will be audio recorded. If selected, participants will receive a $50 incentive for each phone interview, for an additional total possible compensation of $150.
Can I receive cash instead of an electronic gift card for completing a PCHOOSE survey?
No, at this time electronic gift cards are the only available compensation for completion of a PCHOOSE survey.
If I miss a monthly survey, can I take the following month survey?
Yes, you are still eligible to complete the monthly survey for the following month.
How long do I have to complete each monthly survey?
We ask that people complete monthly surveys as soon as possible after receiving a text link to the survey each month. If you don’t respond you will be sent two reminder follow-up text messages approximately 3 days apart. If a survey is not completed within 1 week you will need to wait for the following months survey.
What happens if my PCHOOSE study phone is lost or stolen?
If you lose a study phone for any reason, we ask that you notify the study team as soon as possible so that the phone can be locked and the data plan can be suspended.
Will I receive a replacement PCHOOSE study phone if I lose it?
No, each participant will only receive one study phone for the duration of the study.
Can I still participate in the surveys if I lose my study phone?
Yes, participation in the study can continue by providing a new phone number to receive texts and/or have monthly surveys sent to via email. You could also arrange to complete surveys with someone else’s phone by calling PCHOOSE study staff and answering questions over the phone.
What happens with my PCHOOSE study phone and data plan after the 6 months?
Upon enrollment, you will be required to provide informed consent where we will make it very clear that you get to keep the phone once the study is done. However, the data plan is only covered during the study period. We will remind you each month and provide a 30 day grace period once the study is over (time to transfer their plan).
What happens if I choose to use my own phone instead of the PCHOOSE study phone provided?
If preferred, you may choose to utilize your own personal smartphone to complete surveys on. You will not be compensated for the data plan or other costs incurred from the use of your personal phone. The PCHOOSE team recommends utilizing the study phone as the best method of survey delivery.
If study team members can’t have in-person contact, how do participants receive a study phone?
The study team can mail phones to service providers so that they can distribute to their clients who have agreed to participate. Phones can also be mailed directly to participants if they have a secure address to receive a package.
Are agencies compensated for helping to recruit study participants?
Yes, agencies will be compensated if they can refer 20 or more participants during the 6-month recruitment period. The amount of compensation will be commensurate with the number of people recruited from an agency. The amount is calculated based on $125 per person. For example, if an agency helps recruit 20 people it would receive a $2,500 payment. There is no limit to the number of participants an agency can refer to the study, but recruitment will end once 800 participants have enrolled.
